A bit about me and a lot about Dr Bhat
I had my second thread change on 30th November which was a wee bit more painful than the first time…the pain was definitely manageable, but also did stick around for 3 days. Everyone has different experiences of course, but I am comforted in the knowledge that it’s not always the same pain strength or duration. And anyway I welcome the pain as it’s part of the healing process! Now when I am pained I laugh through it instead of cry like I used to – because there is an end in sight! Woop! Sure that’s not always the case, there are definitely harder and more exhausting days, but I pick myself up and just keep swimming Dory styles (that’s my mantra).
I went in for what was meant to be a 3rd thread change 5 days later but that didn’t happen. Doc did a clean of the internal wound which hurt like a mofo, and I am now going in for daily wound clean/dressing until he’s ready to change the thread again.
This is a perfect example of how you just never know what will happen
here and it’s important to take it all in your stride. Have no expectations
when visiting doc and just focus on being positive and healing.
I do love that if I have any concerns, even in between thread changes/appointments, I can always contact Dr Bhat. Whether it be a trip to the clinic just for peace of mind, or a WhatsApp message to him directly.
Why did I choose Dr Bhat?
Thanks to the Facebook support group I learnt a LOT. I read everythingggggg on that page, going back a few years. Literally. All comments and recommendations and experiences. All of it. I also located multiple vlogs on YouTube and watched all of them.
Obviously the main thing to think about when deciding to undergo kshar sutra is who is going to be your doctor! (dah) There were two doctors whose names kept coming up repeatedly. One much much more than the other but both had glowing recommendations. I researched both as much as I could and emailed them each to see what their opinion would be relating to my clinical notes.
The main factor behind deciding to use Dr Bhat was his experience. Not only has he been practicing for over 20 years, but he has vast experience in treating complex cases. This was validated numerous times by firsthand experiences. Once I started hearing or reading about people’s successful treatments with Dr Bhat it helped cement my decision. The stories were endless and I could not find a single negative experience as hard as I tried. Truly. That in itself was a surprise to me!
Initial contact
Dr Bhat can be contacted via email or WhatsApp. I made contact via email and received a reply within a day stating that he could treat my fistula based on the report I'd sent but would require examination upon arrival to confirm this. Also I was asked a series of other questions (age, gender, associated diseases, current medications etc), and was advised it would take between 3-4 months to treat.
Other
than that initial email, he is a man of few words in emails/WhatsApp so don’t
be disheartened if you contact him and receive short replies! It’s not
indicative of his personality at all.
Experience
Doc has over 20 years of experience and is highly regarded in his field. A list of his accreditations and achievements are listed here:

He has three doctors working alongside him gaining experience. One of which said it was her dream to learn from him and she waited 3 years for the opportunity.
Cost
Dr Bhat charges one fee for every international patient (contact the doctor for this information). It does not matter how long your treatment will take, how many procedures or thread changes you will need, how complex your case is. (Also doc uses these funds to assist locals who are not in a financial position to do the treatment. He gives back to the community). He does not even address payment for the first couple of weeks of your treatment which says a lot in my opinion!
The fee does not include medications and gauze.
All visits to the clinic are included, and there are a lot of visits (since starting treatment just over a month ago I’ve been into the clinic over 20 times).
It’s important to point out that Dr Bhat can also provide treatment for all ailments. He and his colleagues have studied Ayurveda and can prescribe or treat pretty much anything! I am currently undergoing treatment for dry eye condition (a real upstairs/downstairs situation this week!).
Dr Bhat’s specialty is colorectal stuffs but if you have any other concerns you wish to address, whether it be for yourself or a loved one – just ask and you shall receive! There is a pharmacy at the clinic for all your needs.
Dr Bhat’s personality
Honestly, the more I see doc, the more my respect grows.
He treats you as a human. A whole person. He sees you. Such is the way of Ayurveda which treats the
mind, body and soul really.
He’s very good at reading people and reinforces positivity whilst telling
you you are strong.
He does not for a moment discount the severity of the issue and your pain
and even said to me that anyone who has suffered with a fistula can accomplish
anything, and at the same time he puts a positive slant on everything because
the power of the mind is key! ‘Be happy’ is his mantra!
He maintains his professionalism yet has a friendly and warm manner and a
cheeky/jokey side.
He treats all his staff as equal (unlike what I witness at home at the
hospitals where there is an obvious hierarchy). I’ve even had one of his staff
tell me they are like a big family.
Above all else he is very humble. This speaks volumes. He has said to
many healed patients that it was their doing; they were the ones that healed
themselves. I understand that the patient is a vital part of healing, but he’s
very modest when it comes to the praise he receives. He is truly happy for his
patients when they are cured and it’s clear he is in this profession to
actually heal humans as a whole! He’s just down to earth.
I know I have just rambled for a while about doc’s personality, but I think it’s just as important as his skills. When undergoing such a treatment, on a part of your body that is very personal, I am eternally grateful that it’s by someone who encompasses such genuine qualities. I feel full trust in docs capabilities and just let him do his thing. I did not for one moment feel this when being treated at home. Not once. I felt like a body part only and a guinea pig – and I was one of the lucky ones who only underwent 3 surgeries (worst I’ve heard of is 28!!!)
Bit of a legend our doc.
It’s important that I stress that I am speaking from my experience only and am not insisting that all fistula fighters wishing to undergo kshar sutra chose Dr Bhat. I absolutely know there are other doctors who can treat this in India and it’s an individual choice (obviously). It's important for each individual to find the doctor that feels right for them. For me all signs pointed to Dr Bhat. The longer I’m here and the more I learn about him and other patient’s experiences, the more I realise I have made the right decision for me.
Someone has turned Dr Bhat into a stamp! haha love it
